So many versions of this great composition. It is played or sung so often at group sessions or jam sessions over here in the UK, but it never sounds bad.

Thanks for this very informative and inspiriing piece Matt.
This is probably my favourite song of all times. I cannot remember which version it was I first heard as a kid, but it always was with me ever since without knowing much about it. A friend introduced me to Powell and Monk in my early 20s, and Monk’s solo version (not sure which one.. they all melt into one, and each is more beautiful than the other) took my breath away – till I heard Miles’ on his album by the same name. I still remember looking outside the window while the track played in the room, as I melted into the music and the descending night outside. That particular recording is one of the dearest things known to me.

Wow, I’ve often wondered about other versions of this song, which is one of my favourites. May I add another one: in the same LP of Dexter Gordon’s, which more or less contains the OST of the movie, there’s a fascinating version of Around Midnight by Herbie Hancock, exclusively piano. It’s a delicatesse for conoisseurs (and I’m running out f french words now).
