This all-star line-up was recorded at the Cafe Bohemia by Rudy Van Gelder in one of his pioneering live recordings, over two evenings in Nov. 1955. Originally released as three LPs, and reissued as two CDs, it is worth seeking out for its musical value alone, as well as historical documentation of the early evolution of post-bop performance live recording.

I totally agree, Hank Mobley was hard bop royalty, but A Slice at the top showed him in a more progressive vein. 4 piece horn section, focus on modal, more melodic tunes some at waltz tempo, accompanied by other hard bop icons Morgan, Tyner and Higgins. Thanks for the music.

It’s a real crime how overlooked Hank Mobley was in his lifetime. This list is a solid start. Next on the list should be Slice of the Top, a smokin’ record with a 7 pc band that includes Billy Higgins pushing it hard non stop.
