Big band composers like Bill Holman have acknowledged his lasting inspiration with regards to counterpoint and melody. Also, Jeru’s late albums ‘Age of Steam’ and ‘Walk on the Water’ are so achingly beautiful that I cannot leave them unmentioned. But ‘Birth of the Cool’ was Jeru’s, to the extent that Miles declined participation when it was re-recorded in 1992. How can anyone look past this?
