Thanks for mentioning the Blue Mitchell connection. The very first track on his first release as leader (Big 6, also with Wynton Kelly, piano) includes the premier recording of the Benny Golson composition “Blues March”, which achieved legendary status via the subsequent recording on the Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers album Moanin’. Nice detail worthy of recognition, as is the extensive relation of Mitchell and Kelly.

Kelly was certainly one of the swingingest, and musically sophisticated. In that company would also be Tommy Flanagan who just happened to be on most major innovative recordings – Giant Steps and Saxophone Colossus come to mind. A bit earlier we have Hank Jones, Duke Jordan, John Lewis, Al Haig, Sonny Clark, Red Garland. They all were unique and their tradition is being carried on by Kenny Barron, certainly one of the greatest musicians that we are fortunate to still have with us.

Probably shined even more brilliant after he left Miles and formed his trio with PC and Jimmy Cobb. He could solo or accompany with the best of the hardbop pianos in the 1960s. The Trio with Joe Henderson on ‘Four’ recorded at The Left Bank in Baltimore is quintessential Kelly and
awesome interpretations by the underrated Joe
Henderson. A must for serious hardbop fans.

One of my favorite records is Blue Mitchell’s “Blue’s Moods”, with Wynton Kelly at the keys. In fact I got the single (I’ll Close my Eyes/When I Fall in Love) way before I got the LP, and the 7′ was announced as both musicians’, not as Mitchell’s. Impressive musician. Thanks for the article!
