When I was 14, My father took me to hear Nina at the Village Vanguard. Her vibration alone knocked me sideways even before she opened her mouth. Her regal composure and knowingness were awesome to my young, impressionable self. She touched a part of me I didn’t know I had. Later in life I moved to Tryon, NC where Nina was born. I moved away, but ten years ago my brother and several Simone devotees had a wonderful full life bronze statue created of her. It sits in the center of town. She still inspires me with her music.

Check out Back to Balboa album. Seminal work. Kenton a true jazz pioneer. Dave Brubeck and Stan Kenton set the table for all who came after. Wonderful to see him recognized.

PS, I would strongly suggest Kenton’s ARTISTRY IN BOSSA NOVA album (Capitol 1963). The adaptation of the Brazilian rhythm to Kenton classics produces some truly magical moments.
